Chud is what you call someone when “idiot” feels too soft and “fascist” feels too specific. It’s an insult that lives in the sweet spot between ignorant and obnoxious. On TikTok, you’ll see it dropped in comment sections under videos featuring bad takes, outdated opinions, or people who clearly don’t understand the platform they’re using.
I first encountered this word on Twitter around 2020, but it didn’t hit TikTok until later. By 2023, it was standard vocabulary in left-leaning internet spaces. The word has a satisfying harshness. Two letters, one syllable, maximum impact.
Where chud came from
The origin is surprisingly cinematic. “C.H.U.D.” was a 1984 horror movie about “Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers,” mutants living in the sewers of New York City. The film was forgettable, but the acronym stuck around in cult movie circles.
The political usage emerged around 2017, when leftist Twitter used “chud” for right-wing users with extreme views. The metaphor: sewer monsters surfacing with bad takes.
By 2020, the word had broadened. Anyone with a bad take or aggressive ignorance could be a chud. The definition expanded to include anyone willfully out of touch with modern norms.
I’ve been called a chud twice. Once for saying I didn’t understand a TikTok trend, which was fair. Once for saying pineapple belongs on pizza, which was absolutely not fair and I will die on that hill. The word works because it’s vague enough to apply to almost anyone who annoys you, but specific enough to sting.
How people actually use it
On TikTok, the usage is usually reactive. Someone posts a video with a genuinely bad take, like “women shouldn’t wear pants” or “phones are ruining society,” and the comments fill with “chud.” It’s not an argument. It’s a dismissal. The word says “your opinion is so bad it’s not worth engaging with.”
The term has also become a self-aware joke. People will post their own mildly problematic opinions and caption them “chud behavior.” The irony is the defense mechanism. If you call yourself a chud first, nobody else can use it against you.
There’s a specificity to the insult that makes it effective. A chud isn’t just wrong. They’re wrong in a particular way: confidently, aggressively, and without any awareness of how out of touch they are, which is what separates a chud from someone who simply disagrees with you or even someone who holds an unpopular opinion but at least understands why it’s unpopular.
Honestly? The word is useful because it’s specific. “Idiot” is too broad. “Fascist” is too political. Chud hits the sweet spot. I use it sparingly though.
