beauty trend 2026

The beauty routine of going to bed wrapped in overnight products like masks, mouth tape, and heatless curls, then peeling it all off in the morning.

Morning shed is the beauty trend where bedtime makes you look like a mummy so that morning makes you look like a filter. You pile on the overnight gear (face mask, chin strap, mouth tape, heatless curlers, maybe a silk bonnet), sleep in all of it, then film yourself peeling everything off the next morning to reveal the result.

The shedding is the content. Nobody posts the going-to-bed part without the morning reveal.

Going to bed looking ridiculous on purpose

The routine varies by creator, but a standard loadout reads like a skincare aisle shopping list: overnight mask, mouth tape (supposedly to force nose breathing), heatless curl rods, sometimes a chin strap holding the whole structure together like scaffolding.

Then comes the morning video: full gear, a greeting through the mask, then the unwrapping. By the end: glowing skin and bouncy curls. Caption: “worth it every single night.”

I’ll give the trend this: the commitment is impressive. Sleeping in that rig looks genuinely uncomfortable, and these people do it daily for content.

Where the slogan came from

The trend runs on one sentence: “the uglier you go to bed, the prettier you wake up.” It became the unofficial motto, stamped across thousands of videos. Endure looking absurd for eight hours, collect the payoff at sunrise.

Videos under the tag pulled in views by the tens of millions, and beauty brands started quietly designing products around the format. When a trend influences what gets manufactured, it has officially left the “meme” category.

The backlash

Not everyone’s applauding. Dermatologists have flagged the mouth taping part specifically as risky for anyone with breathing issues, and skeptics note that half the “results” are just good morning lighting. There’s also the cost: a full setup adds up fast, and the whole thing has a “resting is now also work” energy that rubs people the wrong way. Fair points, honestly.

“my bf saw me in full morning shed gear for the first time and just slowly backed out of the room. no he does not get it”

@glowwithella: night 47 of the shed. my roommate thinks i joined something
