Brandwatch later put total TikTok views for the trend at 1.8 billion. One reel. That’s all it took.
How a joke question became an idiom
Most trends die in a month. This one mutated instead. The phrase survived because it filled a vocabulary gap: English had no casual word for “thing I think about constantly for no reason.” “Obsession” sounds clinical. “Living rent free in my head” was already tired. “My Roman Empire” walked in and took the job.
You’ll notice the gender angle faded fast. The first month was all “why do men love Rome so much,” with historians getting dragged in to explain legions to TikTok. Then everyone quietly agreed the phrase was bigger than that. Now it’s just a confession booth.
