Silent walking is exactly what it sounds like. You go for a walk. No podcast. No music. No phone call. Just you and the sidewalk and whatever thoughts show up. TikTok creator Mady Maio posted about it in summer 2023 after her nutritionist suggested 30 minutes of daily walking and her boyfriend challenged her to do it without headphones. Her video went viral. Suddenly everyone was calling it a “movement.”
Why silent walking took over
The appeal is obvious once you try it. Gen Z and millennials were burned out on wellness trends that required buying something. Silent walking needed nothing. No app. No subscription. No gear. Just the absence of audio. Maio called it a “flow state.” Commenters called it “finally, a trend I can afford.” By fall 2023, the hashtag had millions of views and the trend had jumped to Instagram Reels.
I tried it once in October 2023. Felt like my brain was screaming for the first ten minutes. Then it got quiet. Weirdly quiet.
The trend also spawned a secondary market of irony. Creators started posting “silent scrolling” and “silent existing” as parodies. But the original trend kept growing. By 2024, wellness influencers were charging for “silent walking guides” that were literally just maps of parks. The commodification was inevitable. Still, the core idea remains free. Step outside. Shut up. Walk.
The silent walking skepticism
Not everyone bought in. Critics on TikTok pointed out that silent walking is just… walking.
“My grandpa has been doing this since 1950,” one top comment read.
Others mocked the idea that you needed a TikTok creator to tell you to remove your AirPods. The backlash peaked in late 2023 when a wave of videos parodied the trend by calling mundane activities “silent eating” and “silent showering.” But the joke didn’t kill it. If anything, the mockery kept it alive longer than most wellness fads.
